Green Maps Redesign

This University of Manitoba design assignment was to redesign the Winnipeg and Region Green Maps web page (http://www.arch.umanitoba.ca/greenmap/). Green Maps promote inclusive participation and sustainable community development worldwide. They use a set of universal icons to pinpoint a community's natural, cultural and sustainable resources like recycling locations and community gardens.

My
approach was focused on a complete overhaul. I redesigned everything from the logo for Winnipeg Green Maps to the map itself. I used a photograph of The Forks as a background because The Forks is a hub for sustainable living. I used the contrast of the black with a subtle 90% opacity so the image could still breath through the harsh black. The map itself was my focus as it needed to be highly interactive but easy to navigate through. I divided the map into communities so at a click of the mouse you could be taken to your area or an area you wanted to visit immediately. You can enlarge, print or save the map and you can scroll over the icons and at the bottom the site will give you the icon, definition and the specific location. In total I redesigned 6 pages of the website and the logo.
